If there’s one thing everyone loves with the latest smart home technology items, it’s the fact that they’re all connected to the internet and give you the possibility to use and control them from your smartphone. However, one of the slowest items to adopt this “always connected” standard is the peephole camera.

That being said, there are some that work with a smartphone, but you might find it difficult to figure out what peephole camera works with smartphones. Below we’ve got a couple of options for you. To add to that, we’ll also discuss what are some of the best features you will get if you get a smartphone-compatible peephole camera.

We’re kicking things off with a model that’s technically not a peephole camera, but it does a great job of being one. The AREBI is a spy camera that you can mount pretty much anywhere, including on the outside of your door.

Why does it work as a peephole camera compatible with smartphones? Because it comes with a 150 degrees field of view, has Wi-Fi, and has motion detection. The only thing missing is two-way audio, but not everyone needs it, and it’s priced a lot cheaper than all the other models on our list.

Video quality is excellent. It has 1080p video, and comes with IR LEDs that allow it to capture clean image even at night, in pitch black scenarios. It’s actually a great way to add surveillance to a door that doesn’t have any kind of peephole, without needing to drill any holes or have unsightly cables.

If you’re able to spend a bit more money, and want a true peephole camera compatible with smartphones, you might want to take a look at the DoorCam. Similarly to the AREBI, it doesn’t require you to have a peephole, or drill any holes, yet is an excellent peephole camera that’s incredibly easy to install. All you have to do is pop it over the door, and you’re good to go. In this link, you can find an article on how to install a door peephole camera.

In terms of video, it records HD quality footage, and it does have IR LEDs that will help you quite a bit when it comes to night time recordings. You will notice some quality loss, but it’s nearly imperceptible, unless you’re really nitpicking. The other thing it comes with is a pretty impressive 160 degrees field of view that captures a massive part of what’s going on outside your door.

You get all the other features you’d expect – motion detection, two-way audio, IP surveillance, Wi-Fi, everything. You’ll be able to view and control the DoorCam from your smartphone without much trouble, making it one of the best cameras that are compatible with a smartphone.

The only thing we didn’t love about it is the fact that your door must be between 1-3/8” and 2” wide, otherwise the DoorCam won’t fit. But if you’re good with that, by all means get it.

We’ve saved the best for last, and the Blink XT2 is definitely the best peephole camera if you want to use your smartphone with it. Blink is actually a company by Amazon, and this allows them to integrate connectivity with Amazon’s Alexa-enabled devices, giving you even more ways to control it. Not only can you use your smartphone, but you can use voice commands, too. (1)

In terms of video, you will get excellent quality with a full HD resolution and a fairly wide field of view. It does record pretty good quality video at night, too, so we have basically no complaints about it.

You get all the smart functionality you need – two-way audio, motion detection, everything, and you also get free cloud storage for up to a year. Battery life is impressive, and a set of two AA batteries will keep you running for at least two years. It’s definitely one of the best peephole cameras compatible with a smartphone.

Why is it worth it?

You might come across some pretty good budget oriented models that come with a display you basically hook up to the inside of your door. Those cameras are seldom compatible with a smartphone, so we won’t be talking about them. They are, however, a touch cheaper, which might make a difference to some. But investing in a camera that works with smartphones is a good idea.

The first thing you’ll get with such a camera is the connectivity. The fact that it works with a smartphone means that it is connected to the internet, and you can access the video feed from just about anywhere. You don’t even have to be at home – you can be halfway across the world, and it’ll still work. What this also means is that you won’t have to get up and physically get to the door in order to look at the display – you can easily do this from the comfort of your couch.

The other important thing is motion detection. If your peephole camera has motion detection, you will get the ability to get an alert on your smartphone when someone is moving outside your door. They don’t even have to ring the doorbell, the camera will detect their movement and let you know. This allows you to immediately connect to the feed and check out what’s going on.

Last but not least, you have two-way audio. Even though some don’t find it that necessary, we believe that it’s an underestimated feature. It lets you talk to whoever is outside your front door through the speaker and microphone on the camera itself, so you can get rid of those door-to-door salesmen without even being there.
